Pruning is the act of trimming plants, trees, or shrubs by cutting off dead or overgrown branches or stems.

The goal is to:

  • Encourage healthy growth
  • Improve shape or appearance
  • Increase flower or fruit production
  • Prevent disease

Types of Pruning

1. Thinning

  • Removes entire branches or stems to open up the plant.
  • Improves airflow and light penetration.
  • Common for trees, shrubs, and dense plants.

2. Heading (or Topping)

  • Cuts back to a bud or node to encourage bushier growth.
  • Often used on hedges or shrubs.

3. Deadheading

  • Removes spent flowers.
  • Encourages more blooms.
  • Common for flowering annuals and perennials.

4. Shearing

  • Aesthetic shaping (like for hedges and topiary).
  • Can stress the plant if done too heavily.

5. Rejuvenation Pruning

  • Heavy cutback to renew overgrown or neglected shrubs.
  • Often done in stages over a few years.
